Wow, I’m just so used to the longer US-spec bumpers that seeing a Focus with smaller, tucked-in ones is making me feel weird.

Reverse image search comes back as a piece used for an image for the ‘scrappage scheme’ a few years ago.

Kinja'd!!!

“At the height of the banking crisis in 2008/9, UK car sales tanked. In November ’08, new car sales plummeted 36 per cent compared with the previous year.

In an effort to help the British car industry, the government introduced the now-infamous scrappage scheme, which gave a £2,000 contribution to the cost of a new car when you traded in your old one.

To qualify, your car needed a current MOT and to have been in the same ownership for at least a year. So they were all theoretically perfectly serviceable, but they had to be scrapped regardless.

Enthusiasts worried at the time, and still do, that many cars that were worth saving got sacrificed in the name of turning a quick profit. In response to a freedom of information request, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has compiled a full list of every make and model that bit the dust. You can see it in full here .

For us enthusiasts it makes frightening reading. Hundreds of Alfa Romeos, Audis and BMW’s were crushed. 101 Porsches met their maker, as did several classic Austins, Jaguar XJS’s and Triumph Spitfires. There’s even a TVR S2 and a Morgan 4/4.

Incidentally, the accuracy of the names recorded on the list is variable, as many car traders clearly can’t spell. Still, the mistakes have given the Ford Fista, and a Rover Turdo…

People with more time than we have, have worked out that Ford was the most-scrapped manufacturer, with more Fiestas biting the dust than any other individual model. It would be interesting to compare the list against DVLA data to see if any cars became extinct as a result.

While it is clear that many of the cars traded under the scheme were only worth a couple of hundred quid, going through the list you have to wonder how many people could have sold their car on for quite a lot more than the two grand they got.

Equally, for every story of a nice low-miler being tossed aside, there’s another of the MOT issue being fudged on a wreck, and dealers stepping in to save classics.

So who benefitted from all this carnage? Well, the government must surely have intended to help the manufacturers that build cars in the UK. But it was Korean manufacturer Hyundai that did best, selling 47,000 cars under the scheme. 26,000 of those were the Indian-built i10 city car. Go figure…

The real winners were, of course, the car dealers. The 392,227 cars traded under the scheme accounted for 20 per cent of all sales for the 10 months it ran. And let’s not forget the scrapmen. Or the people who really did save money by partaking.”

Vauxhall have started another (running currently) ‘scrappage scheme’ with a £2,000 off your new car.

As long as you’ve owned the car you’re trading in for a minimum of 90 days, a car from any manufacturer will be accepted to receive £2,000 off the price of a new Vauxhall

“Vauxhall has launched a new scrappage scheme deal five years after the official ‘bangers for cash’ incentive came to an end.

The original scheme, launched by the Government in 2009, was designed to boost the UK motor industry by offering an incentive for drivers to buy more new cars during the recession.

Nearly 400,000 new cars were sold through the scrappage scheme, accounting for a fifth of all new car sales by the time it came to an end in March 2010.

Vauxhall’s new scheme means customers can take advantage of a £2,000 (including VAT) scrappage trade-in against most new passenger cars in its range.

To qualify for the scheme, customers must have owned their trade-in vehicle for a minimum of 90 days. There is no upper age limit for cars and any manufacturer’s vehicle will be accepted.

Customers can combine scrappage with Vauxhall’s other offers, including Flexible Finance, Flexible PCP and a free insurance offer.

For example, young drivers could take advantage of £99 insurance (18 to 20 year olds) for one year’s insurance on both ADAM SLAM and Corsa Limited Edition, while those aged 21 and over could get one year’s free insurance.”

So that’s basically the UK’s version of our infamous Cash for Clunkers program?

Ouch that rear bumper is bigger. No likey.

Though the Mk1 Focus was the initial replacement to the Escort here in the U.K. and Europe and was a new design scheme for Ford. The Mk2 and 2facelift were much better looking.

Yes, the one back in 2009 (the one the OP has a picture from) was a national government funded one to stimulate the economy like as you say ‘cash for clunkers’ but car companies have similar offers from time to time to stimulate sales within their own brand. Vauxhall have scrappage scheme for £2,000 off while Skoda have a £1,000 off loyalty scheme.

Our Mk. 2 Focus, however, was not better looking:

It was really a heavy facelift of the Mk. 1.

We also lost the 3 and 5 door hatchback, and the wagon.

The “cash for clunkers” program was equally a total waste of government (your) money. Same results here as in the UK. Korean and Japanese manufactures did well. The only economy stimulating effects were the extra money that went into the dealership and salesmen’s pockets. Typical government waste of money program where politicians use your money to make it seem as if they are “doing something” for you.

My main point - government program or not, why would you want to picture your car next to a pile of scrap? What is it trying to say, your car will be here soon? Worse, this car is a pile of scrap. The car on the flatbed says to me these cars need to be scrapped now.

The later Mk2 (facelift) is/was a handsome car.

I’m not a huge fan of the Mk3 facelift (Focus RS look). Granted it’s only a subtle tweak from the Mk3 but it’s a tweak I’m not keen on.
